Morocco has been elected a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the 2027-2029 term. The vote was marked by strong support from Member States, confirming the credibility of Morocco’s multilateral action.
Morocco has just secured a highly significant election within the United Nations system. The Kingdom was elected a member of the UN Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC, for the 2027-2029 term, during a vote held Thursday at the headquarters of the international organization in New York.
The election was marked by a particularly strong result. Morocco obtained 178 votes out of the 187 Member States present and voting. This outcome reflects broad support and renewed confidence from the international community in the Kingdom’s constant commitment to multilateral action, sustainable development and international cooperation.
Through this election, Member States also recognize Morocco’s credibility as a constructive actor committed to promoting diplomacy based on dialogue, solidarity and mutual respect.
Under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom continues to demonstrate its firm commitment to renewed, effective and solidarity-based multilateralism, grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter, dialogue among nations and the search for concerted solutions to shared challenges.
Established under the United Nations Charter, the Economic and Social Council is one of the UN’s six principal organs. It plays a central role in guiding and coordinating the economic, social and cultural activities of the UN system. At the heart of multilateral action, ECOSOC also oversees the follow-up to major conferences and summits organized by the United Nations.
Its main areas of action include the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the humanitarian affairs segment, and the Financing for Development Forum. These platforms help structure collective action around the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.
Morocco attaches particular importance to ECOSOC as a central body within the United Nations system. At a time when the international community is facing multiple and interconnected challenges, the Kingdom remains convinced of the Council’s essential role in strengthening the coherence of the UN development system and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Drawing on its national experience and its regional and international commitment, Morocco intends to actively contribute to consolidating ECOSOC’s role as a central platform for coordination among different stakeholders: Member States, international institutions, the private sector, civil society and academia.
During its term, the Kingdom will continue to take an active part in the work of the Council and its subsidiary bodies, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, reform of the UN development system, financing for development, and South-South and triangular cooperation.
Guided by its attachment to the values of solidarity, dialogue and shared responsibility, Morocco will work to make the United Nations Economic and Social Council a more effective and inclusive lever for addressing the priorities of developing countries. This election thus confirms the Kingdom’s place in international efforts aimed at building collective responses to the major challenges of development.
