Pedro Sánchez: “Morocco is a leading strategic partner for Europe”

In Madrid, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for stronger partnerships between the European Union and its Southern neighbors, placing Morocco at the heart of this strategic dynamic.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking on Thursday in Madrid, advocated the development of strengthened strategic partnerships between the European Union and its Southern neighbors, with the aim of building an area of shared prosperity and lasting stability. Morocco was explicitly cited as a priority partner in this vision, which is expected to shape European external action in the years ahead.

Speaking at the opening of the Conference of Spanish Ambassadors accredited abroad, held on January 8 and 9 under the theme “Spain, a global actor,” the Spanish head of government stressed the need to consolidate relations with the countries of Europe’s southern neighborhood. According to him, these partnerships are an essential lever for addressing shared economic, security, and geopolitical challenges.

Pedro Sánchez emphasized that strengthening relations with Morocco is among the major priorities of Spain’s foreign policy, as well as that of the European Union, for the year 2026. This orientation is part of a strategic approach aimed at deepening cooperation with a key partner engaged in a dynamic of stability and regional development.

The Spanish Prime Minister recalled that relations between Spain and Morocco are based on shared interests and multidimensional cooperation, covering areas as diverse as the economy, energy, migration management, and security. In his view, this relationship represents a model of Euro-Mediterranean partnership founded on trust and political dialogue.

By highlighting Morocco as a central actor in Europe’s southern neighborhood, Pedro Sánchez also underscored the importance of a more coherent and ambitious European vision toward this region. Such a vision, he argued, must move beyond short-term approaches and be anchored in a long-term perspective, serving regional stability and shared prosperity.

This stance comes at a time marked by major geopolitical realignments on the international stage, as the European Union is called upon to strengthen its strategic alliances. For Spain, the partnership with Morocco thus stands out as a structuring pillar of its external action and its role within Europe.
